Elephant Head Rock is the largest pinnacle in the Similan Islands and is one of the most spectacular dives available in the area. Aptly named for one of the three massive boulders jutting out of the water that somewhat resembles an elephant, Elephant Head Rock in Thailand offers truly spectacular sights beneath the surface of the water too. A number of swim-throughs are available thanks to high piles of underwater rocks and boulders and the walls are covered with an array of sea fans and corals. Octopi and boxer and cleaner shrimp have all been known to call Elephant Head Rock home, so be on the lookout for the smaller creatures who are often just as interesting as the larger ones.

The site is well-known for its black tip, leopard and white tip sharks. Set within a beautiful cave, the site offers divers beautiful rocky arches, gullies and a great deal of colour at a manageable maximum depth of 35-40 metres. You’re likely to spot rainbow runners, triggerfish, blue-ringed angelfish, yellow goatfish and big snappers. Divers visiting the sandy areas of the site have reported sightings of the rare McCosker’s dwarf wrasse and spectacular purple fire gobies. The rocks add another element to an already difficult dive, with regularly reported strong surges and currents but Elephant Head Rock is definitely a must-dive spot.
