Josh Daugherty of Athens won the diving competition with 290.20 points at the NEPA swimming and diving league championship meet completed Saturday at Williamsport High School.
According to Athens coach Mark Keister this is the first diver from Athens to win the League Diving Championship in at least ten years and possibly the first male diver ever.
“We knew going into the meet that he would have a good shot. However, the other divers were doing so well that we had to wait for the announcement of the final tally of the scores,” Keister said.
Athens’ Matt Woodard finished 5th (246.10) and qualified for the District IV Diving Meet. Jared Gonzalez of Towanda finish 6th (233.90). Towanda’s Richard Patt finished 9th (226.40) and teammate Tom Munkittrick placed 10th (225.55).
The girls also had a nice meet. Chelsea Dimon of Athens finished fourth (255.40). Angie Dolinich of Sayre took 6th (229.20). Athens’ Mariah Conrad placed 7th (216.70) , Erica Rogers took 9th (211.10) and Hilary Lane finished 10th (202.15) for Athens.
“I was very pleased with the results of today’s meet. Josh is very excited and is beginning to believe that he can win at every level of competition, Keister said. Chelsea finished just behind a trio of talented seniors. She could be one of the top divers in the district with the toughest competition coming from her teammates next year.”
