It was day for records Saturday in the Rochester Swimming and Diving Invitational at the Rochester Recreation Center pool.
It was also a day for another dominating performance by Century as it easily claimed the team championship in the six-team event. The Panthers, ranked fourth in the state in Class AA, scored 623.5 points for first. Eau Claire Memorial was second (562.5), John Marshall third (378.5) and Mayo fourth (326.5).
"To be honest, I didn't expect our guys to swim as well as they did, because we'd had a tough week of practice," said Century coach Dale Magnuson, who pointed out that nearly all his swimmers turned in personal bests. "That they did so well just tells me that we have some really good things yet to happen."
Meet records were broken in four events. In the 200 individual medley, the record was broken by two swimmers. Century's Brian Kiel was first in 1:55.59, while JM's Kendrick Bachman was second in 1:55.92. Meet records were also established in the 100 backstroke, the 100 breakstroke and the100 butterfly. Kiel got the record in the 100 backstroke (51.83), Bachman got it in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.26) and Chida got it in the 100 butterfly (52.81).
All three records done by Century swimmers were also school records. The Panthers also got individual first places from Alex Cox, in the 500 freestyle (4:57.42), and Chida, in the 50 freestyle (22.37). The Panthers were relay winners in the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle.
Century had its big day without standout Dan Lee. He has been out the last two weeks with sickness.
Mayo standout Chris White was first in the 1 meter diving with a 319.70 total. The JM 200 freestyle relay team was first in 1:33.39.
