recall sitting in the press box this summer at Cleveland Browns Stadium watching the Detroit Lions spank the Browns in a preseason game, and thinking these are two long-suffering franchises are headed in opposite directions.

I was right, although I got the teams mixed up.

I used that game as a measuring stick, since the rebuilding teams had a lot in common -- unproven first-time head coaches, high-scoring offenses, defenses with a lot of question marks.
