Divers not happy with antiquated diving

THE Malaysian diving team did not like what they saw of the spanking new facilities at the Aquatics Centre in the Korat Sports Complex when they went for their first practice session yesterday morning.

Coach Huang Qiang, who is in charge of senior divers Yeoh Ken Nee, Rosharissham Roslan and Leong Mun Yee, said that the diving boards were not to the latest international specifications.

“We were diving from these boards 20 years ago. The springs are not tuned according to the technical specifications,” said the former world champion from China.

The Malaysian divers will have to bring down their level of difficulties in order to cope with the hard boards or risk incurring injuries.

“We hope to get used to it by the time competition starts on Wednesday. It did not start off well for us today. Hopefully, it will be all right,” said Huang Qiang.

Asian Games silver medallist Ken Nee, who will be making his fifth SEA Games appearance, said that the conditions were far from perfect because it was an outdoor pool.

“If we compete in the morning, the glare of the sun could affect us because the roof is quite short and does not extend beyond the spectators' area. The sun comes up very early here and it is usually hot before 10am, which is the time of competition,” said Ken Nee.

He is down to compete in the 1m and 3m springboard individual events. Ken Nee will also compete in the 3m synchronised springboard competition with Rosharissham.
