Whether she realizes it or not, Leigh Waltz is becoming more and more of a big-meet diver.
The Dallastown sophomore has stepped up as the season goes along and Saturday at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, Waltz proved her mettle by winning the District 3 Class AAA championship.
She scored 403.7 points, barely finishing ahead of Spring Grove sophomore Lauren Magalski, who posted 403.4.
Waltz said, "Lauren and (Cedar Cliff's) Rachael Mumma are amazing divers. I wasn't sure (I could win). It is always your goal to win. I was so excited."
Waltz led after eight dives, but she knew that Magalski was coming on strong.
"I have to be honest, (Magalski) had an awesome final round. I thought she had got me," Waltz said.
Last weekend, the pair finished in that same order at the YAIAA diving meet and both will be ready to better their 2007 scores at the PIAA AAA diving championships on March 12.
Magalski won the bronze medal at districts and finished 14th at the PIAA meet last March.
