Tom Daley, 13, will become the youngest British male Olympian in Games history this summer after the Plymouth prodigy yesterday produced the latest astonishing performance of his young career at a World Cup event in Beijing.

Daley had to finish in the top eight in the 10m platform to guarantee himself an Olympic berth in the same event in August. Against a world-class field, all much older, it was always going to be tough. But Daley wowed the judges, with four perfect 10s among the scores for his last dive, to claim seventh spot.

Daley, who won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award in December, was mobbed by the media in the post-dive press conference and is set to become one of the Games' star attractions.

Yesterday's event was won by Germany's Sascha Klein with Britain's Pete Waterfield in eighth.
