Swimming & Diving Championships wrapped up Saturday at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami University. Union finished 44th out of 53 teams at the event hosted by the College of Wooster.
In the 200 backstroke, Amy Nestlerode (Endicott, NY) finished 12th in the consolation finals with a time of 2:05.72 and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. She broke her own school record in the event. She was 14th in the preliminaries at 2:06.86. In the same event, Mary Kate Baumann (Armonk, NY) had a time of 2:08.68 to finish 21st in the preliminaries.
A man aboard an NOAA vessel died while diving near Key West and authorities are investigating why. The 54-year-old from Ramrod Key was not identified pending notification of his family.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says he and a buddy were surveying the sea floor on Monday for an upcoming coral restoration project. They were heading back to the surface -- from 80 to 100 feet under -- and reached a decompression stop. That's when the buddy noticed the man floating downward.
Senior diver Molly Freeman (Barrington, IL) wrapped up her Union career, competing in the three meter diving event. She was 20th in the preliminaries, with a score of 374.55.
