Diving can become a passion that family members enjoy together, and the bond created underwater is hard to beat. But don't assume that because you love the sport your children will too.

I have often seen people put under strong emotional pressure to dive by husbands, wives, parents or siblings. The result is that they never properly relax underwater - an essential part of becoming a safe diver.

Make sure that your child really wants to dive and feels confident in the water. Never force anyone to try it; you might put him or her off for life.

It's also worth remembering that although scuba diving is statistically very safe, there are still hazards involved, and by encouraging your loved ones to dive, you share responsibility for those risks.

The PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) system is the qualification most frequently offered worldwide. "Bubblemaker", PADI's introduction course, allows children aged eight and over to try out the equipment in a swimming pool.

Proper diving begins with the Junior Open Water certificate from age 10. Junior divers must not dive deeper than 18 metres (60ft) and those under 12 must dive with a parent or guardian.

At 15 this can be converted to Open Water Diver certification. Similar schemes are offered by other diving agencies, including the British Sub Aqua Club, NAUI, SSI and CMAS.

Check out the dive club or diving centre before enrolling your child. Is the equipment well maintained? Introduce yourself to the instructor; if you or your child feels in any way uncomfortable with the instructor, ask the manager if other staff are available.

Family groups should ask about having private instruction so that they can proceed at their own pace without the pressure of being in a large group of novices.

Scuba diving from boats presents its own risks; check that the boat has the necessary safety equipment (especially a radio) and ask to see the first-aid kit before you leave shore.

I recommend buying a good mask and wetsuit before you travel. Your child will feel more comfortable with equipment that fits well.
