THE first meet of the FINA Diving World Series held in Tijuana, Mexico featured some home cooking as Mexicans divers scored well against the vaunted Chinese contingent.
Paola Espinosa claimed the women's tower event with 412.55 points, while Yahel Castillo took the men's three-meter gold with 494.55 points as China sustained a pair of rare losses. The only other non-Chinese gold went to Oleg Vikulov and Konstatin Khanbekov of Russia in the men's tower synchro event with 446.34 points.Zhou Luxin took the men's tower title with 530.75 points, while Qin Kai and Wang Feng nailed the men's three-meter synchro with 444.09 points.
Guo Jingjing topped the women's three-meter with 368.25 points, while Wu Minxia and Guo won the synchro three-meter with 342 pionts. Wang Xin and Chen Ruolin then claimed the women's tower synchro title with 368.82 points.
Two more World Series events are on tap as Sheffield, Great Britain hosts the second leg May 24-25 and Nanjing, China follows a week later on May 30-31. Overall, FINA is offering $480,000 of prize money.
