Evarist Bartolo, MLP spokesman for tourism, accused the government of neglecting the diving sector which could provide a livelihood to many involved in tourism, such as diving centres, hotels, apartment owners and restaurants.

The government, he said, was not working to develop the sector. Projects which should have come into stream years ago were not implemented and beach facilities to help divers were not provided – no sanitary facilities have been provided, diving sites have not been protected against abuse and no advertising of the sector was being made.

Labour in government, Mr Bartolo said, was prepared to work hand in hand with the association of diving centres to improve the sector and make it more competitive.
