Freshman Amanda Smith posted a top-16 time in the 500 freestyle and the 400 medley relay team of Kate Zubkova, Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Presley Bard posted the sixth-fastest time in the prelims on day one of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The 400 medley relay squad took nearly three seconds off the previous school record with a time of 3:35.31, bettering the old mark of 3:38.16 set at last year's Big Ten Championships. Zubkova's lead-off split of 52.35 in the 100 backstroke is the second-fastest time in school history, just behind her mark of 51.68 set at this year's Big Ten Championship.
Smith finished 14th in the prelims with a time of 4:43.45, just over one-tenth of a second off her school record and the second-fastest time in school history. That guaranteed her a spot in the consolation final all but assures her the first All-America honor of her career.. Allison Kay clocked a time of 4:50.25 in her prelim to finish fourth in the heat and 44th overall.
Donna Smailis was seventh in her heat and 41st overall with a time of 2:01.58 in the 200-yard individual medley.
