Athens Olympic diving gold medallist Chantelle Newbery has all but secured her spot on Australia's team for the Beijing Games.

The 30-year-old finished second to Sharleen Stratton in the three metres springboard at the selection trials in Hobart on Saturday evening.

Newbery retired after the Commonwealth Games in 2006 but the lure of competing at a third Olympics led to a change of heart
