A 38-year-old Olympia man has drowned while diving with a friend near Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom.

Olympia Police Chief Bob Drozynski says Alan Kaschube and a friend were diving about 1,000 feet below the surface when he started having trouble. His friend helped him to the surface and called for help.

Medics administered aid, and Kaschube was taken to St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood on Saturday evening.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office has concluded the death was an accident and the official cause was a salt water drowning.
