ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving teams have been awarded the Oakland Univeristy Athletic Department's TOP TEAM AWARD, announced on Monday.
This marks the second straight season that the swimming and diving pteams have been awarded this prestigous award.
"I'm extremely proud of the fact that our team's have won the department's Top Team Award," said head coach Pete Hovland. "Going into each season this is the number one goal of each of my two teams and to win it consecutively, and two out of the last three years it has been awarded, is very gratifying for all of us. The student-athletes at OU have a long standing tradition of excellence in the classroom, on the playing fields, courts, and pool.
"I've also know how involved each of our teams are and how much they give back to the community. Therefore, to win this award against some pretty tough competition says a lot about our swimmers and divers, and my staff's willingness to go above and beyond, while representing their team, the department, and the Oakland community as a whole."
The award is given to a men's and women's team that accumulates the most points during the season. Student-athletes can earn points for service events, team functions, campus events, and athletic events. Points are also distributed for top academic performances and the team's finish amongst the conference.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams contributed to over a dozen community service projects last year, some of which included reading projects at Detroit Country Day, Rogers Elementary School, University Hills School, a Thanksgiving food drive project, Toys for Tots, and Special Olympics. The program posted 22 student-athletes to the Academic All-Mid-Con team in 2007.
