Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson hit out at referee Mike Russell and Grimsby striker Danny North following the 4-2 defeat at Grimsby.

Richardson claimed the young striker had dived and was disappointed Russell was taken in.

"The first turning point of the game was another dive by their centre forward," he said. "He's certainly getting better at it because his dive at Saltergate was excellent but this one was even better. You could tell by his face when he got up. He was laughing all over. He knew that he had conned the referee. And the referee bought it and it's galling to concede that kind of goal.

"After that we gifted them the second and that was always going to make life difficult. We got to grips with the game after that and had two or three chances to nick a goal after that time. We conceded the third and at 3-0 down it looked like we had no chance. But when we play like we did in the last half hour, you know you've got a chance.

"Getting that first goal was important, we got the second and with 10 minutes to go it looked like we might cap a magnificent fightback. Then we conceded a second penalty. (Barry) Roche is adamant he had not touched him. I will have to see it again.

"The referee was in a better position for the second one but for the first one he was 40 yards away. I think referees are far too easily influenced by fervent crowds. It sticks in the throat because it happened at Saltergate to contribute to the three points Grimsby took there. You can say they have done us twice, in my opinion unfairly."
