In its season opener, the San Diego State swimming and diving team (1-1, 0-1 Mountain West Conference) defeated Boise State, 168-132, but fell to host Utah, 156-128, in a double dual meet at the Ute Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Senior Ana Dowell and freshman Brooke Vessey both posted a pair of second-place finishes to lead the Aztecs.

Dowell placed second in the 50 free (25.41) and the 100 free, swimming a personal-best 54.33 in the latter event. In the first collegiate meet of her career, Vessey swam to a second-place finish in both the 100 backstroke (59.86) and the 100 butterfly (59.01).

Senior Katie Smith also had a solid day for SDSU, finishing second in the 200 back with a mark of 2:11.87, and posting a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:00.94) and the 200 individual medley (2:15.45).

Sophomore Jessica Morrill (200 breaststroke, 2:25.62) and senior Brittany Daly (1,000 free, 10:47.31) notched two more second-place marks for the Aztecs.

Sophomore Caitlin Atkinson was the top-finisher for San Diego State in both the one-meter (second, 217.55) and three-meter (second, 227.35) springboard events, while her teammates were not far behind. Junior Megan Flanagan captured third-place in the one-meter with a point total of 216.90, and classmate Kathleen Heuring took third in the three-meter with a total score of 220.05.

The Aztecs return to action on Dec. 1, when they travel to Hayward, Calif., for a non-conference meet at Cal State East Bay at noon PT.
