A Canadian sky diver who crashed into a runway at the DeLand Municipal Airport has died, a hospital official said Friday night.

Mia Prebinski, 24, was trying to land Thursday but was too low to the ground when she attempted a turn to slow her descent, a fellow sky diver told police in a report released Friday.

Prebinski was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach on Thursday afternoon after the accident. She died at 11 a.m. Friday, a nursing supervisor said Friday night.

Vincent Lemay, another jumper on the plane with Prebinski, said her parachute opened successfully and the jump was normal until she tried to land, police said.

Lemay said he saw Prebinski apply the parachute brakes, which caused the parachute to close by a third. LeMay said Prebinski realized she was too low and tried to correct her mistake, releasing the parachute brakes but the parachute pushed her to the ground faster.

Prebinski struck the asphalt runway with both knees and then slammed her face into the asphalt, the report states.

According to National Skydiving League Web site, Prebinski has performed 350 jumps and was a member of the Cat Women, a Canadian national women's four-way sky-diving team. The group completed approximately 70 jumps in 2007. Their winter training in DeLand added another 50 jumps to the group's logbook.
