The Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams will host Oakland Friday at 6 p.m. at MSU's IM West Building. Admission to the meet, which is also senior day for five members of the squad, is free. The meet against the Grizzlies marks the only home meet for the men's swimming team this season, and just the second time the women's team will be at home. The Spartan women opened the season with a 157-141 win over Illinois at home on Oct. 21.
The Spartans took on Oakland in the regular season finale last season, with the women winning, 170-128, and the men dropping a 164-136 dual score. Senior Adam Schmitt won the 50 and 100 free and the 200 IM against the Grizzlies last season, and sophomore Krzysztof Olszewski won the 500 and 1,000 free.
Juniors Julie Kahn and Betsy DeJonge and a trio of sophomores - Sarah Biasello, Mara Loniewski and Sasha Lewerenz - led MSU to the win in last year's meeting. Kahn won the 100 free and placed second in the 200, while DeJonge placed second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free. Biasello won the 200 breast, Loniewski won the 200 free and Lewerenz placed first in the 100 back.
MSU's men's team owns a 4-6 dual record while the women's team is 4-7.
MSU's five seniors - Tony Grace, Matt McNichols, Adam Schmitt, Matt Torres and Jason Vadney - will be honored for their performance and dedication during their careers. The women's team has no seniors on its roster.
Friday's contest is the regular season finale for MSU. The women's swimming & diving team will compete at the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 21-23 in Columbus, Ohio. The men's Big Ten Championship is Feb. 28-March 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. NCAA Diving Zones will be held Sunday, March 2.
