The University of Vermont women’s swimming and diving team won its eighth straight meet on Sunday, defeating America East rival Binghamton 165-134 on the road. The Catamounts improve to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action with the victory. Vermont now has recorded double digits wins in back-to-back seasons and for only the fourth time overall in the history of the program.
“Even with competing in two meets in the last three days, we saw some good things today, but it also pointed out some work that we still have to do as we continue to prepare for the America East Championship,” said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.
Freshman Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) led the Catamounts with three victories on the day. Weaver won the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.10 and took the 200 IM in 2:10.73, while also leading UVM to a 1-2-3 showing in the 100 freestyle. The freshman won it in 54.01 and was followed by teammates Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) and Rachel Kent (Mystic, Conn.).
Sophomore Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Renee Gliddon (Acton, Mass.) each won two events. MacMillan was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:57.37) and the 200 backstroke, while Gliddon continued her diving dominance of late by winning the one and three meter events.
Gliddon broke a UVM varsity record in the three-meter event with a score of 275.18, outdistancing her previous personal best by more than 30 points. Lisa Ciavaglia held the old UVM record in the event with a score of 261.00, which she set on January 26, 1994.
Also earning victories for the Catamounts were junior Lauren Honrath (Monroe, Conn.) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:51.88), Kent in the 50 freestyle (25.53), junior Ashley Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.00) and Clark in the 500 freestyle (5:16.00). Vermont also took first place in the 200-medley relay in a time of 1:53.35 with a team made up of Weaver, Gillespie, senior Nicole Underhill (South Burlington, Vt.) and Kent.
Vermont is now 6-2 in America East meets over the last two seasons, as its previous conference victory prior to last year came in 1993. The Catamounts only two league losses over that time have both came against New Hampshire.
The Catamounts wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to face Providence at 11:00am.
