University of Kentucky freshman diver Stephen Andrews finished fifth on the 1-meter board in the finals of the men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Washington last night.
Andrews was seventh in the preliminaries, then scored a 380.55 in the finals. The finals appearance made him an All-American.
Indiana University (1 minute, 18.45 seconds), with Jeffersonville High product Ben Hesen, was eighth in the 200 freestyle relay in the final.
Hesen also led off IU's 400 medley team, swimming the fastest backstroke split (45.72) of the prelims. The Hoosiers finished 10th in the finals after Hesen swam the second-fastest backstroke split (45.89) among all finalists.
The University of Florida's 400 medley relay team, which includes St. Xavier High School product Clark Burckle, was eighth in the final heat (3:09.77).
The University of Louisville's 200 free (1:18.90) and 400 medley relay (3:12.19) teams were both 14th in the preliminaries. UK was 15th in both events, finishing .01 seconds behind the Cards in the 200 free and .37 seconds back in the 400 medley.
"It couldn't have been a better morning," U of L coach Arthur Albeiro said.
In the finals, the Cards finished 13th in the 400 medley (3:11.94) and 15th (1:19.56) in the 200 free, while the Cats were 14th in the 400 medley (3:12.36) and disqualified in the 200 free.
Host UK, ranked No. 50, did not drop a set and defeated Murray State 7-0.
The Cats improved to 9-9, and the Racers fell to 1-7.
