Taryne Cantillo broke a six-year old school record in the 200 butterfly, but it wasn’t enough as the North Texas swimming and diving team lost to SMU and Wyoming in a double-dual meet Friday night.

The No. 10 Mustangs dropped the Mean Green 83-30, while Wyoming topped North Texas 80-33.

“I fell really good about our performance tonight despite the losses,” said North Texas head swimming and diving coach Joe Dykstra. “Swimming against this tough of competition is only going to help us score better at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.”

Cantillo swam a 2:08.41 in the 200 fly; a half-second faster than the previous school record of 2:08.99 set by Michelle Gomez in 2001. Nicole Leslie picked up two of the four Mean Green’s second place finishes. Leslie, a sophomore from Alvin, Texas, picked up the silver in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. Bonnie Garcia-Meitin tallied the other second place finish for North Texas with her 2:05.84 in the 200 backstroke.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Garcia-Meitin, Cantillo, Hannah Bakke and Elizabeth Weiss swam the fastest time thus far of the season with a 3:55.89. The mark also sets the third fastest time in school history in the 400 medley relay.

The North Texas swimming and diving team will not return to action until the travel to Las Vegas, N.V. to compete in the UNLV Winter Invitational Dec. 15-17.
