Jill Smolczyk of the University of South Dakota won the program's first-ever national championship by a member of the women's diver or swimmer at the NCAA Division II Championships when she won the 1-meter diving Friday night at the University of Missouri Aquatic Center.
Smolczyk, a senior from Omaha, posted a score of 421.15. A two-time women's outstanding diver at the North Central Conference Championships, Smolczyk narrowly missed the 3-meter diving national title on Wednesday when she placed second.
It was the second All-American honor of the Championships for Smolczyk and the sixth of her career. Teammate Emily Kluth also won All-American honors with a fourth in the 1-meter diving (394.65).
South Dakota had two honorable mention All-American performances on Friday. Erin Wagoner, who set a school record with a 2:08.13 in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly Friday morning, finished 14th (2:09.12).
The 800 freestyle relay foursome of Leita Rolfe, Megan Gordon, Sallie Collins and Wagoner also claimed honorable mention All-American honors, with a 13th-place 7:51.20.
Thursday, the Coyotes recorded three All-American performances.Rolfe narrowly missed winning a national individual title when she placed second in the 400 individual medley in a school-record 4:27.53. Rolfe, who won All-American honors, was just off the pace of 4:25.83 recorded by Drury's Abbey Musch.
Wagoner earned All-American honors with a sixth in the 100 butterfly (:56.24). She broke her record of :56.51 set last year and later, swam along with Rolfe, Gordon and Stacy Bjorlie on a sixth-place 400 medley relay that was clocked in 3:52.60 and won All-American honors.
