THIS WEEK: The University of Utah swimming and diving team opens up its 2007-08 campaign with the Reddish Relays on Friday, October 12, at 4:00 p.m., with both the men and women in action. On Saturday, October 13, the Ute women will open up the conference slate as they host New Mexico. The meet with the Lobos begin at 1:00 p.m. Both meets will be held at the Ute Natatorium on the campus of the University of Utah.

UTE NOTES: The weekend meets mark the beginning of a new era for Utah swimming as Greg Winslow takes the helm as the new head coach. Winslow comes to the Utes after four years as an assistant at Arizona State University. Over his time with the Sun Devils he coached 12 All-Americans and qualified six of his swimmers for the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials. Winslow qualified four athletes for the US National Junior team, which is the most swimmers one coach has ever qualified at the USA swimming level in history.

Utah comes off a season in which the women placed second at the MWC Championships after a 10-0 dual meet season. The Ute men finished fourth at the MWC Championships and ended the season with a 5-6 record.

Entering the 07-08 season, Utah was picked to finish third on the women's side and fifth on the men's side in the preseason Mountain West Conference coaches poll.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:

REDDISH RELAYS - Utah will host the annual Reddish Relays against BYU. This is a non-scoring relay competition that showcases many relay events that are not typically seen during the dual meet season. Entering the season BYU was picked first in women's competition and second on the men's side of the preseason MWC coaches poll.

NEW MEXICO - The Lobos feature a young team that boasts strong swimmers in the sprint free and breast events. Last season, the Utes beat New Mexico 135-110. New Mexico was selected seventh in the preseason MWC coaches poll.

"BYU is a phenomenal team and this will give our freshman their first look at what has been the class of the MWC over the past several years."
