The YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity has launched a $35 million capital program to build a new Y and renovate and expand two existing ones.
The organization also has formed a task force to find a location for a Center City Y to replace the one at 1425 Arch St. that it sold in 2003.
The moves grew out of a strategic plan formulated by 135 Y volunteers last June, two months after John F. Flynn was named the organization's president and CEO.
Flynn had been president of the Capital District YMCA in Albany, N.Y., for 17 years. During that time, he oversaw the organization's growth from four branches with 8,000 members and a $3.5 million annual budget to 11 branches with more than 90,000 members and a $30 million budget.
