The Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA will be the place to be Saturday for anyone with an interest in scuba diving.
From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Y will host a Discover Scuba program designed to introduce those with an interest in scuba diving to the sport in a controlled, supervised area.
“Scuba diving is a great sport,” Y membership and marketing director Jay Rist said. “If you like swimming and if you like the water, scuba is a really good sport to get involved in.”
The program, which is offered free of charge, will be conducted by scuba instructor Ken Parent, owner and operator of Mountain Divers.
The class is open to anyone over the age of 8. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, who will be required to sign a release form. A swim suit and a towel are needed.
If Saturday’s program is successful, Rist said, a similar class might be offered in the future.
“It’s free to the public and we hope those interested will take advantage of the opportunity,” he said.
